Napaまで行かずとも、シリコンバレーの西側から南に向かって横たわるサンタクルーズマウンテンにも、いくつもの小さなワイナリーがあります。そんなワイナリーの一つ、Ridge Vineyardsに出向きました。家からは車で30分ほど、お昼前に到着したのですが、いくつか並ぶピクニックテーブルは、すでにワイングラスを片手にお弁当を広げた人達でいっぱいです。ちょうど年4回（1、4、7、11月の第三土曜日）、Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Associationが開催するイベント日だったのです。イベント用のパスポート（一人$30）を持っていると、本日の特別ワイン（？）が試飲でき、そうでなくとも、無料で3種類のワインを試飲させてもらえます。2-3人のワイナリーの人が、次から次へとお客をさばいてはるのですが、とにかく混み混みで、そんなに狭いわけではないティスティングルームも人だらけ。私たちも、お昼を持参していたのですが、出遅れたようです。無料の試飲だけで、次のワイナリーに向かうことにしました。

＊2004 Santa Cruz Mountains, $35
51%cabernet sauvignon, 47% merlot, 1% petit verdot, 1% cabernet franc. This cabernet blend is produced as a softer, more accessible wine than our Monte Bello cabernet blend.
＊2005 Carignane Buchignani Ranch, $25
100% carignane. More assertive than previous vintages, this delightful carignane will be most enjoyable over the next five years.
＊2005 Lytton Spring, $33
In 1972, Ridge made its first Lytton Springs from vines planted here at the turn of the century, and purchased both the eastern and western portions of the vineyard in the early 1990s.

＊2001 Home Ranch, 375ml, $31
In the opulent 2001 vintage, we selected cabernet sauvignon from the thirfy-five-year-old vines, balancing it with merlot from the younger blocks for this rich, sensous wine -- classic, yet more approachable than the long-aging Monte Bello. We have chosen the name Home Ranch to honor the nineteenth-century vineyard that has been Ridge's "home" since 1959.
